Hi guys,
Just got my new AudioBox 44VSL today and having some teething problems.
It came bundled with Studio One Artist, of course (version 1.5 I believe).
The problem I'm having is to do with panning. Whenever I record a track, and then pan it left or right in the mixer, it doesn't actually pan in my studio monitors or in my headphones, both of which are plugged directly into the AudioBox.
So, here's a minimal example setup:
Guitar connected to Channel 1, Studio Monitors connected to the 'MAIN' left/right line outs, usb connection to the computer.
I open Studio One, click 'create a new song', select 'empty song' and hit okay. I hit T to input a new track, and input it as an mono track. I activate the monitor on the track, and hey presto, I can hear my guitar playing through the monitor.
I hit record and record some guitar. I play it back, and I can hear it. I hit F3 to enter the mixing board. Here I see my track with i/o settings 'Input L' and 'Main Out'. I also have another track (presumable for the final mix) which says 'Line Out1+2' at the top.
Now, I pan my track hard left. I play it back again. I can see on the final mix track that only the left channel is jumping around, the right channel is dead. However, both my monitors are still playing it back - no panning detectable, same in the headphones. I pan it back to center and its gets SLIGHTLY louder in general, but doesn't pan. Now both R/L channels are bouncing up and down on the mix, but no audible difference. Move it hard right and the left channel dies on the mix, but audibly, you can still hear both monitors loud and clear.
I tried moving monitor jacks from the 'MAIN' outputs to the Line outs 1+2 (since that's what it says at the top of the mix thing), but it still doesn't pan properly.
What the hell is going on? Why won't it pan?

Simple, I think.
The default setting in the VSL mixer is for all channels to be panned to the center, so whatever is on that channel will go to the Left and Right main outputs equally, hence will sound like it's centered in the stereo field.
Go to the VSL mixer, and set the pan sliders for the DAW1 and DAW2 faders so that DAW1 is fully left and DAW2 is fully right.
When you play back a track, what's panned to the left will go only to the DAW1 channel in the VSL mixer, and what's panned to the right will go only to the DAW2 channel. Anything that's in between will go to both DAW1 and DAW2 in proportion to the panning in Studio One.
The Pan sliders in the VSL mixer determine where the signal goes after it gets back to the VSL mixer. What's on the DAW1 channel will go to the Left main output, and what's on the DAW2 channel will go to the Right main output.
