I have the Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU) FastLane USB MIDI Interface. I use it to connect my Yamaha P80 digital piano to my iMac and I have been happy with it.

You can do so via direct plug in via the line in or through an audio interface via usb. You need to buy the latter though. But if i were you, just buy a basic midi controller.
